Writing For the Web

Whether you’re a local not-for-profit or a large entertainment facility– writing the copy for your website is always the biggest challenge.

How do you make sure that you reach your target audience, keep their attention and get all of your information across?

Writing for the web is tough –the majority of visitors to your site don’t read all of the content – so it’s important to make sure the most significant content stands out.

Here are a few tips to help when writing the content for your website:

  1. Write in short paragraphs
  2. Use lists or bullets whenever possible
  3. Write only for your target audience and be consistent
  4. Put the most important information at the top of the page
  5. Use sub-headings wherever possible – this will allow readers to skim through the text, but not miss the content.
  6. Incorporate call to actions OR click-able items for the readers – users like to feel involved. For example; link from site to site or page to page for more information.
  7. Incorporate keywords into your content – it’s becoming increasingly important to consider keywords when writing your website content. Think about what keywords can be used to encompass the entire site, as well as specific keywords for each web page. 
  8. Less is more! – give your readers enough information to want to learn more and contact you, but don’t overwhelm your visitors with pages and pages of content.
