What It's Like Being an Echidna

An image of a young echidna whispering in the ear of an older, suit-wearing echidna.

Are you wondering what it is like to work at Echidna? Maybe you are interested in joining our team or you know someone who would be a great fit! Either way, Echidna is always looking for talented team players to come onboard!

If you aren’t already aware, an echidna can be described as an Australian anteater. It’s one of only two types of monotremes (egg-laying mammals) in the world -- the other being a platypus. When the company was founded, Andrew wanted a name that reflected the unique, adaptable, and resourceful nature of the business -- so the echidna fit the bill perfectly.

Over 15 years later, we continue to reflect these qualities at at Digital Echidna!

Unique

What is more unique than an echidna? Well, our team is! Diversity is very important to us. Having a team with diverse thoughts, opinions, backgrounds, skills, and education is what makes our organization continue to be innovative and successful. We encourage differing ideas and new perspectives to create the best possible solution for our clients.

Having a unique team means that we provide a range of company perks and activities to get everyone involved and create a comfortable work environment. From local coffee, company lunches, and Friday happy hours to ping pong tournaments, laser tag, and sports teams, there is something for everyone! There are so many different ways to get to know your team members while getting involved in the company and the London community!

We encourage staff to share their ideas. Often our next exciting outing comes from the mind of our staff!

Adaptable

Echidnas are able to adjust to new conditions effectively and adapt their skills to suit the situation at hand. Being in the tech industry, we need to be adaptable and we invest in our employees so they are armed with the right skills to succeed in their role.

One of our core values is continuous learning. Some of the ways we promote continuous learning is through:

  • Weekly Lunch and Learns where one of our own will present on a relevant topic ranging from technical skills to soft skills to health and wellness;
  • Conference sponsorship and attendance including DrupalCon, Drupal Camps, and Digital Project Management, where employees can network with peers and grow their skill set and career; and
  • Mentorships designed to encourage knowledge transfer from veteran employees to new employees.

Our training not only helps us solve the problems we face today, but it helps us to be versatile and ready for the problems that we will be solving in the future.

Resourceful

Echidnas have the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. It makes sense that we are in the problem-solving industry, right?

Everyone always has such innovative ideas, whether it is project related, cool office decor, or an exciting company event. If you need help or you are stuck on something, you will have no trouble finding many hands that are willing to assist and answer questions.

We also strive to share our resourcefulness with the community around us -- whether that’s tech-focused or social endeavours. We encourage staff members to get involved and we have Echidnas on various boards, committees, and charitable organizations both in London and across the province. We host regular meetups like the London Drupal Users Group, and we have staff members involved with organizations like Ladies that UX and the Diversity in London group.

By supporting various causes, Echidnas can use their skills, knowledge, and creativity to make a difference in the community around us. It’s all part of the open-source ethos that we embrace.
