Confusing Web Terms!

It’s no surprise to most that when you enter the world of websites, you’re entering a world with an entirely new language. Whether you’re a manager in charge of re-developing your organization’s website or an HTML student trying to find your way, it’s easy to get lost in this new world...so we're here to help!

SEO

  • SEO or “Search Engine Optimization” is the process of improving the ranking of a website in search engine (like Google) results. SEO involves editing a website’s content (keywords and key phrases) and HTML. Page structure and incoming links are most important in SEO.

WYSIWYG

  • A WYSIWYG or “What You See Is What You Get” editor is a view often found in today’s content management systems (CMS). The WYSIWYG editor displays web content (that you’re editing) in a very similar fashion to the final output, rather than in HTML.

CAPTCHA

  • CAPTCHA or “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart” is a piece of code put into a website that gives a user a simple test to determine if the user is a computer or human. CAPTCHA’s are often seen as distorted images or text at the end of web or ecommerce forms.

Cache

  • Cache is a web browser feature that saves copies of web pages on your computer’s hardrive. You may be asked to “clear your cache” by your web developer to view recent updates to your website, since your browser may have saved the previous, un-finished page.

Domain Name

  • A domain name is a name that identifies one or more IP addresses, for example yourwebsite.com is a domain name. Domain names are used in URLs (website links) to identify particular web pages, for example http://www.yourwebsite.com/.
