Street Hockey Champions!

From heat exhaustion in 2009 to Play On! champions in 2010 – The Echidna Team wins first place in the Corporate Division at CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! London this past weekend.

Starting with an early game Saturday morning The Echidna Team felt the pressure losing in an 11-10 shootout against The Reggie Dunlops. Was this going to be a repeat of the tournament last year?

Re-focusing and re-hydrating The Echidna Team pushed forward taking their second game with a 13 -8 win over Rogers TV. An optimistic and smiling team re-charged with a patio lunch, planning their strategy for their last game of the day. The entire Echidna Team (plus supporters!) headed back to the park to finish the day with an 11-10 win in a shoot out against the feisty Libro team.

Sunday morning came quickly, but this didn’t hinder Echidna’s performance (ok – maybe slightly as both teams decided to shorten the playing time) winning their 4th game in a 9-2 victory against The KD’s.

Off to the semi-finals we were! – against Libro once again – who would be sure to give Echidna a run for their money. Making some amazing saves and running their heart out The Echidna Team took down Libro in a 10-8 win.

Finals here we come! Facing The Reggie Dunlop’s in the finals (Echidna’s only loss in the tournament so far), the team really needed to focus. In spite of the baking sun and 30+ degree weather, Echidna played strong and won their final game 11-6 taking the championship in the 2010 Play On! London Corporate Division.

I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say that the entire Echidna Team had a blast this past weekend, which is evident in the photos from the tournament. Thanks to everyone who participated in Play On! London 2010 – we’re already looking forward to next year!
