Start by Defining the Content Architecture For Your Website

Defining the content architecture of your website is one of the first steps we lead clients through in our initial Discovery Process. There are two types of content that can make up your website:

  1. Static Content that remains fairly consistent over time
  2. Dynamic Content that changes on a frequent basis

Dynamic content is becoming more and more popular these days because CMS’ can make it quick and easy to update your website on a regular basis. Before deciding whether your website will be made up of mostly static content, dynamic content or maybe a mixture of both, here are some questions to think about:

  1. Does my “company” have upcoming events that should to be posted on the website?
  2. Does my “company” have important news that should be posted on the website?
  3. Does my “company” have frequent success stories to share with our readers?
  4. Should we be posting our media releases or press clippings online?

If you’re looking to add an Events section or maybe a Blog to your new website, the next step is to begin thinking about what fields will be required for each content type (Blog being one content type and Events being another). Think about what information you want to have available online and how this would best be laid out.

For example:

Event content type would likely have a:

  • Title
  • Start Date
  • End Date
  • Body
  • Image
  • Ticket Price

Blog content type would likely have a:

  • Title
  • Teaser Text
  • Date
  • Body
  • Comments

Once you’ve determined your website’s content architecture you’ll be in great standing to begin thinking about design. Start by deciding which of your content types are most important for your audience to view and put these content types on the homepage.
