Happy Birthday Drupal
They grow up so fast, don't they?
Today we wish a very happy birthday to Drupal, as the content management system is now officially a teenager.
On Jan. 15, 2001, Drupal 1.0.0 was released. Now, 13 years later, Drupal 8 is on the horizon, and nearly 1,000,000 sites are using Drupal core, including sites like MSNBC, The White House, The Economist, and a number of Government of Canada ministries and sites, just to mention a few.
Why the growth? Because Drupal is a powerful, flexible, and cost-effective open-source content management system.
Why the growth? Because Drupal allows for enterprise-level content-management framework.
Why the growth? Because Drupal is powered by the largest developer community – one that is comprised of 1,022,894 people in 230 countries, speaking 181 languages – which comes together to power its development.
For businesses, Drupal keeps getting better looking with age, as it affords a lower cost of customization and implementation, while prioritizing mobility and cross-platform compatibility – a must-have for businesses trying to deal with a customer base that is accessing information from any number of devices with varying screen sizes.
And, especially for those of us in Ontario, we can't discount the appeal of Drupal's commitment to accessibility.
At Digital Echidna, we're committed to open-source technology. Many of our staff members are regular contributors to the community and we're committed to sharing our knowledge and giving back, both through our efforts and through educational opportunities like LonDUG.
Drupal has grown a lot over its 13 years. And we're looking forward to seeing what the next 13 years has to offer.
Happy birthday Drupal. And many happy returns.
