Focus Your Writing

I’m often asked by clients, where do I begin writing my web copy? How do I get started?

Whether you’re writing for the web or you’re writing a 20 page report, writing is not an easy task. Thank goodness we can all take some relief in knowing that the basic grammar and writing requirements we learned in elementary school still stand.

  • A sentence must include a capital letter, punctuation (comma, period etc.), a subject and a verb.
  • Every sentence must include an independent clause (a statement that can stand and be understood on its own).
  • If pronouns are used, you must always ensure that the subject and verb agree (plural or not plural).
  • Whether you choose to write in active or passive tone, be consistent.

As we all know, content is the key to any successful web project. No matter how clean or modern your new website design is, you’re website is nothing without accurate, well-written content.

When you start to write your web copy, or any document for that matter, start by focusing on the purpose of your writing.

  • Why am I writing this document OR page copy for my website?
  • What do I want the reader to do when he/she finishes the document OR webpage?
  • Is my main point clearly stated early on?
  • Is similar information kept together?
  • Is the information arranged in order of importance?

Once you’ve answered these questions, the layout and structure of your web copy will begin to flow. What are some or your tips that help you to focus and start your writing?
